GBTU FeBRUARY CHAPTER MEETING

DATE:  Monday, February 26, 2018

TIME:  5:30 PM Doors Open; 6:45 PM Meeting Begins

LOCATION:  Union Street, 107R Union Street, Newton MA 02459

February’s Meeting on February 26, 2018 will be held at The Union Street Restaurant and Bar, 107R Union Street, Newton MA, with good access via T or automobile.

Tom and Dan Harrison from Harrison Anglers will share their insights on trout fishing in central and western Massachusetts waters. The Harrisons operate an incredibly successful (and fish-catching!) wading and floating guide service. The Harrisons have been generous supporters of GBTU for many years.

The Harrisons will talk about targeting big wild brown trout on the rivers in western MA and will discuss timing, tactics, patterns and our approach to putting these fish in the net. They will also discuss targeting pike on the fly and their observations about getting these big predators to eat and hook up on fly tackle.

Tom and Dan and have guided full-time since 2003. They spent their first four seasons in West Glacier, Montana guiding the Flathead Rivers and ran three-five day fishing trips in the Bob Marshall Wilderness area south of Glacier Park. They have guided in La Junta, Chile and the many great rivers and lakes of the northern Patagonia region. While the global experiences were great, their loyalty remains here in Western Massachusetts, where they have guided year-round since 2007.

The Harrisons say: “Harrison Anglers will give you a world class fly-fishing experience and we're located less than two hours from Boston.”

IT’S SPRING!

EVER FISH “THE WORM HATCH” FOR STRIPERS IN RHODE ISLAND IN MAY??

COME LEARN ALL ABOUT IT AT GBTU’S APRIL 24 CHAPTER MEETING!!!

GBTU’s April 24 Chapter meeting offers you the chance to hear a very special program from a very special friend of GBTU.

Join us for what promises to be a very entertaining and informative program on “Dry-Fly-Fishing the Elusive Worm Hatch for Striped Bass Along Rhode Island’s South Shore,” presented by Alan Erdossy of Broadside International.

Among his many other enterprises, Alan has been orchestrating this trip for area anglers for many years now and will fill us in on the timing, the equipment, the techniques – and, of course, the pitfalls and idiosyncrasies of this unique fishing experience which we are lucky enough to have right here on our doorstep.

In addition, as he always does, Alan will supplement his program with “related short subjects,” including an update on the highly-successful VT Trout Camp for Teens (vermonttroutcamp.com), of which he is one of the “founding fathers,” and to which we at GBTU contribute so generously every year.

Alan Erdossy, along with his partner Angus Boezeman, constitute, without a doubt, a New England fly-fishing institution.   Together, as joint proprietors of Broadside International, they have conducted fly-fishing schools throughout New England, and provide guiding and trip outfitting services not only throughout the Northeastern states, but also across the Canadian Maritimes and even as far as Labrador.

Fly-fishing has always been a central passion for Alan since his earliest years.  Yet his background and life experiences are broad, varied and in many ways unique, comprising the life of a world-touring actor, entrepreneur, fund-raiser, and patron of the arts, just to name a few.  As a result, Alan’s programs not only always deliver solid content for New England anglers, but they are also sure to reflect Alan’s uniquely competent and entertaining style.

So, whatever you do, save the date and don’t miss GBTU’S April Chapter meeting on “Striper Fishing the Spring Worm Hatch in Rhode Island” with Alan Erdossy!  See you there!

February Chapter Meeting Recap: A Special Evening with Lou Zambello, Guide and Author at Union Street, Newton

The February Chapter meeting was a great way to break the winter doldrums and get ready for the coming prime time fishing.  Held at a new venue, Union Street in Newton Center, over 50 chapter members – many attending for the first time – mingled over appetizers and drinks.  We hosted Lou Zambello from Maine – one of New England’s best guides – who presented on his new book, “Flyfisher’s Guide to New England.”

Taking us from Maine to Massachusetts, Lou shared his favorite spots to fish – from the very local right outside of Boston to the more rugged U.S. reaches near the Canadian border.  To everyone’s delight, he covered the lesser-known New England waters.  In addition to the “where,” Lou also covered the “how” and “when” – walking us through productive fly patterns for these areas, as well as the best seasons to fish them.

Lou also signed copies of his fabulous new book, Flyfisher's Guide to New England. Lou Zambello has fly fished northern New England for over 30 years and has been a registered Maine Guide for over 15 years, guiding primarily in the Rangeley area. Lou worked at L.L.Bean for more than 14 years and has fished with many renowned anglers. His website, which contains his blog, photos, videos, and more at www.mainelyflyfishing.com.

Lou has published two books: Fly Fishing Northern New England's Seasons, How to Fish Ice-out, Hatch Season, Summer, the Fall Spawning Run, and Winter-- a "how-to" book of tactics and techniques to successfully fish each of the seasons.

His new Flyfisher's Guide to New England is a guide to thousands of waters in New England - with maps, GPS coordinates, and detailed information. Lou also writes a bi-monthly flyfishing column for The Maine Sportsman Magazine and has written for Eastern Fly Fishing magazine. He has several other book projects in the works including a book on how-to-catch trophy trout.

january 2017 CHAPTER MEETING

SALTER BROOK TROUT:  Brendan Annett, Buzzards Bay Coalition

Please join us for the Greater Boston Chapter of Trout Unlimited chapter meeting on January 23, 2017 (and not January 30) at Drumlin Farm, Lincoln. Our speaker will be Brendan Annett, Vice President, Watershed Protection, of the Buzzards Bay Coalition.

Brendan will discuss his involvement over the past 15 years with scientific research, protection and restoration of the remaining salter brook trout streams on the coast of Massachusetts.  Challenges and recent successes in protecting watershed resources around Buzzards Bay will be presented.  Special emphasis will be given to recent efforts to protect the unique and important group of salter streams that flow to the Westport Rivers Estuary at the west end of the Bay.

Last year, with your support, GBTU and other New England chapters raised significant funds to help the Buzzards Bay Coalition protect critical land and water resources around Angeline Brook, a Westport salter stream. This is a fantastic opportunity to learn more about how your involvement with GBTU is critical to protecting our cold-water resources.

The Buzzards Bay Coalition is a regional conservation organization based in Southeastern Massachusetts focused on protection, management and restoration of watershed lands and waters.  Brendan was previously the Director of the Waquoit Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve on Cape Cod.  He began his career working on Pacific Salmon restoration with university research groups, government agencies and a private consulting firm in the west.  Brendan has a degree in Water Resource Management from the University of Vermont and earned his Master’s in Biology from Boston University while studying the conservation biology of salter brook trout at the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole.

The meeting will include a social hour and light dinner, the guest speaker, and door prizes. We expect to have several skilled fly tiers who will be happy to share their expertise with you and demonstrate techniques or introduce to the fly tying.  Come and learn, refine your technique or share your knowledge. Equipment provided. No experience necessary.

Doors open at 5:30 and the presentation will begin at 6:45.  Bring a friend!

Refreshments will be served.

Your Donation enters you into the raffle for door prizes.
